Lotus Light Senior Club Hosts Baking Workshop
On June 13, the Lotus Light Longevity Star Senior Club held its first baking workshop. With the traditional Chinese Duan Wu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, approaching, the club specially invited baking instructor Ms. Ho to teach participants how to make a festive dessert — crystal rice dumplings.
The Duan Wu Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar during the transition from spring to summer, is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. According to historical tradition, the festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from the Warring States period who drowned himself in a river. Today, customs such as making rice dumplings and dragon boat racing continue to be an important part of the celebration.
During the baking workshop, Ms. Ho guided participants in creating beautiful crystal rice dumplings. The ingredients and materials used were simple and easily available, including sago pearls, peeled mung beans, coconut flakes, milk powder, and bamboo leaves. Participants enthusiastically followed the instructor’s demonstrations, carefully listening to each step and even taking notes. Ms. Ho patiently answered questions and demonstrated the entire process step by step.
As the crystal rice dumplings gradually took shape in the hands of the participants, everyone was delighted by their creations. After completing their handmade desserts, participants happily brought their crystal rice dumplings to the Buddhist hall as offerings.
