Lotus Light Responds to Extreme Weather Alert
for Vancouver's Homeless
The City of Vancouver issued an Extreme Weather
Alert (“EWA”) on January 10th, which provides for
250 temporary, emergency shelter beds for
Vancouver’s homeless during sub-zero temperatures,
which will extend until this evening. An EWA
activates the authorities in the Assistance to
Shelter Act, and Police are expected to assist
persons at risk.
In response, dozens of Vancouver shelters and
homeless outreach organizations have mobilized to
fulfill the urgent need for shelter space and
emergency supplies such as blankets and socks.
Marpole Place Received Sleeping Donation
The Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver) and is
pleased to support the City of Vancouver’s outreach
efforts to assist local shelters and organizations
(The Gathering Place, Union Gospel Mission, Marpole
Place, Catholic Charities, Lord’s Rain, Evelyne
Saller Centre and DVBIA’s Ambassador Program) with
immediate need with a donation of 200 new sleeping
bags, which were distributed immediately and over
the weekend, as temperatures are dropped to -5C
overnight. Lotus Light is coordinating multiple
points of distribution, including street walks
conducted through the Ambassadors of the Downtown
Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA).
“Vancouver’s most vulnerable people, the homeless
and disadvantaged, urgently need our help to survive
these weather conditions,” said Teresa Fung,
Executive Director of Lotus Light Charity Society
(Vancouver). “We are pleased to support the DVBIA’s
Downtown Ambassadors’ with their cold weather
strategy to help the homeless population downtown,
so they can continue to direct people looking for
shelters or other resources.”

sleeping bags and emergency care packages in
partnership with local shelters and family service
agencies throughout the Lower
Mainland, including the Vancouver Police Homeless
Outreach Unit and the BC Ambulance Service.
