The Sun and the Moon, the Wind and the Fire

Master Lian Tzi says that every movement in this exercise has its own technical point. Chi is moving and turning inside your entire body.  When you do the different movements, such as the upward movement, the carrying and turning movements, and the releasing movement, it is important that you pay attention to the technical points and to the proper breathing technique. For example, when you are turning, you must hold your breath to allow the chi to enter your dan-tien.

In this exercise, the “Octagon Creating Purity” foot movement from the beginner level is used. The octagon created with your feet represents heaven and earth, the yin and the yang. The chi generated from the Wind and Fire Wheel at the bottom of your feet is the yin and the yang, and the energy of heaven and earth.

This exercise is done in a standing position, using the same foot movements as in the “Octagon Creating Purity” exercise.

Starting position: Stand, with your toes pointing out to the sides (like Charlie Chaplin), your knees bent, and your right foot positioned in front of the left foot, parallel to each other. Position your hands in front of your dan-tien, the back of one hand in the palm of the other, and one thumb on top of the other. This forms a triangle which represents the house of vitality.

I.  The Wind and The Fire Wheel Basic Movement

Keeping your upper body still, use the figure-eight walk from the “Octagon Creating Purity” to move and turn in a clockwise direction.

  1. Bring your right hand up in front of your forehead and your left hand down by your dan-tien. The palms should be facing each other as if you are holding an imaginary big wheel.

  2. Raise your right knee, so that you are standing on one leg. This is called the “Golden Rooster Stand”.

  3. Imagine that your hands are turning an imaginary wheel. As you turn the wheel, your right hand slowly moves down toward your dan-tien as your left hand moves up toward your forehead. When you have completed one turn, your left hand should now be at the level of your forehead and your right hand down by your dan-tien, with the palms still facing each other.  This brings the chi into your body and strengthens the chi.

  4. As your hands are moving, your body should also be turning in a clockwise direction. This allows the chi to harmonize and balance the yin and the yang. As you turn, your leg also moves in a corresponding motion. The turning of your entire body creates the wind and the fire.

  5. Lift your right knee up high, turn 90 degrees to your right, then gently place your right foot in front of your left foot, planting both feet firmly parallel to each other.

  6. Continue the movement by lifting and turning your left knee and foot, then lifting and turning your right knee and foot, all together four times returning you to your original starting position.  You may also repeat the exercise by moving in the counterclockwise direction.

II. Hands Supporting the Sun and Moon Wheel

  1. Bring your right hand up in front of your forehead and your left hand down by your dan-tien, with both palms facing up. Imagine that your hands are supporting the sun and the moon.

  2. Repeat the exercise described in Part I, this time keeping the palms facing up.

III. Big Octagon Step Supporting the Sun and the Moon

  1. Bring your right hand up in front of your forehead with the palm facing up, supporting the sun and moon. Move your left hand behind you to your lower back with the palm facing down.

  2. Lift your right knee and swing backwards 180 degrees, straightening your leg then placing your foot down behind you. Your left leg is bent and positioned in front.

  3. When the foot is up, the hand is also up. As your left hand turns to support the sun and the moon, your right hand is down behind your back with the palm facing up.

  4. Lift the right leg forward (i.e., from the back to the front), taking the big Octagon step and making a 180 degree turn. Your left leg should be stretched straight back and your right leg should be in the front with the knee bent.

  5. Foot up, hands up. Turn the right hand over (palm up) to support the sun and the moon, and move the left hand behind your back with the palm also facing up.
