Lotus Light Food Recovery Program Supports UBC Sprouts with Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Starting in February 2026, Lotus Light’s Food Recovery Program has been donating fresh fruits and vegetables weekly to UBC Sprouts, a student-run organization dedicated to combating food insecurity and making healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food accessible to everyone on the UBC campus.
Donations include a variety of fresh produce such as pears, oranges, apples, eggplants, tomatoes, and cucumbers, as well as specialty fruits like avocados and papayas, all received through Lotus Light’s food rescue network partners.
“Thank you so much for your donation. Many UBC students have access to our community fridge, and all the fruits and vegetables are usually taken within a day,” said Lily, Coordinator of the UBC Sprouts Community Fridge.
Lotus Light has been working with UBC Sprouts since the COVID-19 pandemic to support students in need and help address food insecurity on campus.
Since 2010, Lotus Light’s Food Recovery Program has rescued over 1 million pounds of food from landfills, supporting tens of thousands of low-income individuals and families. In 2025 alone, through collaborations with food rescue networks such as FoodRescue.ca and FoodMesh.ca, dairy manufacturer Lactalis Canada, and local community organizations, the program rescued a total of 160,000 pounds of food, benefiting thousands of families in the community.
Currently, Lotus Light’s Food Recovery Program partners with more than 20 organizations, including food rescue networks, manufacturers, supermarkets, restaurants, and community groups. The program regularly supports a dozen recipient organizations, including community food hubs, kitchens, low-income family service organizations, and inner-city schools.
