Lotus Light Donates Over 10,000 Pounds of Yogurt to Community Kitchens and Food Banks to Help People in Need

In December, many people are often busy buying holiday gifts for family and friends. However, this winter the Omicron variant of Covid-19 upended the holiday season, and with supply chains already disrupted by the recent flooding and highway closures in southern B.C., prices for everyday goods have been steadily climbing. It is getting harder than ever for many low-income families in financially precarious situations.

At the beginning of December, Lotus Light’s Food Recovery Program donated more than 10,000 pounds of yogurt within two weeks to local food banks and community kitchens. These donations benefited low-income families, refugees, and immigrants, with recipient organizations including Kingdom Acts Foundation’s emergency food bank in Surrey, GuruNanak Free Kitchen in New Westminster and Surrey, and community kitchens that serve unhoused populations in the Downtown Eastside.

Additionally, Lotus Light has donated over 500 pounds of grocery items every week to Downtown Eastside community kitchens and food hubs that benefit people in need. These grocery items have also gone towards free lunch boxes for seniors living in social housing. Lotus Light has also distributed over 40,000 care packages in its annual Winter Charity Drive to benefit vulnerable and unhoused members of the Downtown Eastside community.

For the Covid-19 Community Caring Drive, LLCS will continue partnering with generous corporate sponsors, food warehouses, local food assistance groups, and food distribution hubs to distribute much needed food to help people in need in our community.
