Six Schools Receive Thousands of Pounds of Produce from Lotus Light for Spring Break
On March 7, 2025, the Lotus Light Charity Society’s Children’s Assistance Plan purchased thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits from a produce company. These were donated to six schools in East Vancouver with the highest concentrations of low-income student families, just in time for spring break. The donation supports the schools’ Food Hamper program, aiming to alleviate the burden on students from low-income families.
According to a 2025 report by Statistics Canada, one-fifth of new immigrants live below the poverty line, with the majority in deep poverty. British Columbia, the second-poorest province in Canada, faces significant challenges. Campaign 2000, an organization advocating for children’s rights, reported in 2024 that over 1.4 million children in Canada live in poverty. This means one in five children are growing up without basic necessities, such as healthy food, that are essential for their well-being and development.
Children are the future pillars of society and the hope of the nation. Improving the environment for their healthy growth and learning is an urgent issue that society must address. It requires collective efforts from all sectors to support their well-being.
Located in East Vancouver, where child poverty is most concentrated, the Lotus Light Charity Society has established the Children’s Assistance Plan to regularly distribute food supplies to the neighborhood programs of inner-city schools, helping students from low-income families. Particularly before spring break and summer vacation, Lotus Light prepares large quantities of food for these families to bridge the gap caused by the interruption of school food programs during extended breaks.
This spring break, Lotus Light purchased a large quantity of fresh vegetables and fruits for six inner-city schools in the Vancouver School District. The initiative received enthusiastic responses from school administrators, teachers, and parents.
“Thank you so much. We are so grateful—the produce is so fresh,” said Janey Lee, Senior Teacher at Thunderbird Elementary.
“Thank you very much! We are so happy that you selected us as one of the schools you help,” said Sylvia from Xpey’ Elementary.
