Lotus Light Donates 10,000 Pounds of Food to Help Impoverished Children
To celebrate the birthday of Living Buddha Lian Sheng, founder of the Lotus Light Charity Society, the Vancouver branch launched a series of donation initiatives in May 2025 to support students from low-income families in inner-city elementary schools, as well as underprivileged families in the wider community.
In early May, Lotus Light donated more than 3,500 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits to five inner-city schools: Thunderbird Elementary, Xpey’ Elementary, Seymour Elementary, Britannia Elementary, and Grandview Elementary. At the end of May, an additional 700 pounds of rice and canned food were donated to Strathcona Elementary and Seymour Elementary, benefiting over 100 low-income families with school-aged children.
In addition, Lotus Light made three separate yogurt donations in May, totaling over 5,500 pounds. These donations were distributed to community kitchens, inner-city elementary schools, Aboriginal shelters, and food distribution centers—including Guru Nanak Free Kitchen, Thunderbird Elementary, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Elementary, and the Aboriginal Front Door Society—benefiting over 2,500 low-income families.
Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver) is based in East Vancouver, an area with one of the highest concentrations of low-income families with school-aged children in the city. According to the Canadian government’s Social Service Index (SSI), more than one-third of families with children attending the six inner-city elementary schools in East Vancouver rely on Income Assistance. In some schools, up to 90% of families are classified as low-income.
In response to this urgent need, Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver) has been actively launching programs to support families with school-aged children since 2013. These initiatives include the Children’s Nutrition Backpacks, Children’s Food Hampers, and the Children’s Assistance Plan. The society also donates grocery gift cards, canned goods, rice, flour, and other dry food items. To date, Lotus Light has donated over 60,000 pounds of food and $24,000 worth of gift cards, earning heartfelt gratitude and appreciation from low-income families and schools throughout the inner city.
We warmly invite kind-hearted individuals from all walks of life to support our programs through monetary or in-kind donations. The healthy development of children is essential to the future of our society. Your support is deeply appreciated.
