Lotus Light Donates Over 1,000 Pounds of Food to Support Inner-City School Students
According to Food Banks BC’s annual Hunger Report, nearly a quarter (24.4%) of British Columbians experience food insecurity, and approximately 33,000 children received assistance from B.C. food banks in a single month—representing 31% of all clients.
In response to this urgent need, Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver) established the Children’s Assistance Plan, through which the organization regularly donates food supplies to support students from low-income families attending inner-city schools. Following its New Year’s Day donation of 3,000 pounds of food to low-income families and individuals experiencing homelessness, Lotus Light continued its efforts on January 15 by donating over 1,000 pounds of nutritious food—including fruit juice, soup mixes, granola cereal, and canned tuna—to four inner-city schools on Vancouver’s East Side, where many families live below the poverty line: Thunderbird Elementary School, Britannia Elementary School, Seymour Elementary School, and Grandview Elementary School.
Many elementary schools in Vancouver’s East End serve communities with a high percentage of low-income Indigenous families, migrant workers, refugees, and new immigrants, and are in urgent need of ongoing support from community organizations. This need is especially critical in the period following the holidays and at the start of a new school term, when food donations from various charities are often reduced.
Janey Lee, a senior teacher at Thunderbird Elementary School, expressed her appreciation upon receiving the donation: “Thank you so much. It’s a great donation and we are most appreciative.” Stephanie, a Neighborhood Assistance Assistant at Britannia Elementary School, also shared her gratitude, saying, “The juice is very helpful for the families. Thank you so much!”
Lotus Light’s Children’s Assistance Plan, established to support food hamper programs for vulnerable students from low-income families in inner-city schools, sincerely welcomes donations from all sectors of society to help provide nutritious food and daily necessities.
