The Lotus Light Charity Society Vancouver chapter is pleased to receive a proclamation from the City of Vancouver, designating July 7, 2018, as Lotus Light Charity Community Caring Day. This special day also happens to mark the charity’s 25th anniversary of serving the local Downtown Eastside (DTES) community.
Every July, Lotus Light Community Caring Day aims to bring businesses, residents, community service groups, and neighbourhoods together to raise awareness and provide resources/support to the poorest members of the local DTES community (low-income families, men, women, children, seniors, and homeless). On July 7, 2018, the LLCS will be hosting its second Lotus Light Community Caring Day event at Oppenheimer Park to celebrate community caring and benefit the poorest members in the heart of Strathcona’s Chinatown neighbourhood.
Lotus Light Charity Society’s Mission
Lotus Light Charity Society aims to promote a stronger community through its motto “through caring and learning, we help to build a better tomorrow” and relies on financial and in-kind donations from individuals and corporate sponsors to support the charity’s multi-faceted services and programs (social assistance, education, medical assistance, and cultural awareness).
For the last 25 years, Lotus Light Charity Society has been helping vulnerable members in our community. The Annual Winter Charity Drive has provided sleeping bags, emergency food, and winter care packages to various homeless shelters and non-profit groups in our local community. The Hot Meal for Homeless Program has monthly distributed free hot lunches at Oppenheimer Park to serve over 300 homeless and impoverished residents of the Downtown Eastside Vancouver community. Since the program started, more than 10,000 low-income residents have enjoyed a free meal. The Children Nutrient Backpack Program donates grocery products to the Strathcona Community Centre Food Safety program to help low-income families with school-age kids.
On July 8th, 2017, the first annual Lotus Light Community Caring Day was officially proclaimed by Deputy Mayor of Vancouver, Tim Stevenson to recognize Lotus Light’s 24th anniversary of community service amongst thousands of attendees at Oppenheimer Park.
