LLCS Food Recovery Program Continue to Thrive
7000 lbs of food rescued and donated to charities
In just two weeks, Lotus Light’s Food Recovery Program rescued nearly 5,000 lbs of food valued at $250,000, for distribution to dozens of charities and organizations helping those in need.
One recipient organization of this donation is the Salvation Army, which will be picking up 3200 lbs of seafood, sausages, vegetables, and souffles on October 29th.
Alvin Chong, Director of Community Development for the Salvation Army’s Belkin House, extended his gratitude to the LLCS in a thank you letter. “Your generous support assists us not only in providing a meal but assists us in giving back dignity to those who have come down in hard times and are in the process of breaking down their personal barriers and reintegrating back into the community.”
Lotus Light’s Food Recovery Program began in 2011 as a weekly donation pick-up of baked good donations from Cobs Bread, Terra Breads, Bread Affair, and the St. Germaine Bakery. Since then, the program has grown tremendously and numerous charities and organizations serving the Downtown Eastside (and low-income families across the lower mainland) continue to receive donations to this day.
The LLCS will continue to help community members in need and we welcome any generous donations and support throughout the year to bring hope to local community members struggling for a brighter future.
