Volunteering with the Lotus Light Charity Society (LLCS) has been an extremely rewarding experience, both for myself and the people we help. To start the year, on January 12, 2019, we received two generous food donations from Kent’s Kitchen and Floata Seafood Restaurant. With their contribution, we were able to provide a full nutritious meal consisting of chicken, mixed vegetables, and fried rice to 250 impoverished individuals.
Since October 2018, this has been my third time volunteering for LLCS’s Hot Meals for the Homeless Program. Each time, I was able to see the positive impact the LLCS was able to bring to the Downtown Eastside (DTES) community.
Rain or shine, approximately 250-300 people lined up in hopes of receiving a plate of hot food before we had exhausted the amount for the day. With the help of donations from our sponsors and the efforts of our volunteers, we were able to provide nutritious meals to those most in need of support.
Being able to make a difference and seeing the positive impact through simply providing a hot meal to the people in the DTES area is what keeps me coming back to volunteer. I hope that the program will continue to have the support of new and current generous donations from various restaurants and companies in the lower mainland so that the LLCS can continue to serve the community.
The Hot Meals for the Homeless program was initiated by Master Lian Tzi, President of the LLCS. In the past three years, the program has served more than 10,000 people, bringing nutritious meals to those in need with the support of community sponsors and compassionate volunteers.
The LLCS will continue to facilitate the monthly program to help community members in need. We welcome donations of any amount to support the lives of our fellow impoverished residents. Donations can be made via PayPal or credit card at our website. Your donation is much appreciated and needed to help us continue offering this widely appreciated program in the community. A tax receipt will be issued for donation amounts that are $20 or over.
