Support Children Food Backpack Program
Every week, Lotus Light Charity Society donates over 100 Lbs of non-perishable food to Strathcona Community Centre Children Food Backpack Program.
According to Statistics Canada, the Province of British Columbia has the highest child poverty rate in the country. School-aged children in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are especially affected and are often without enough food over the weekend when their parents need to work to support the family.
Since its inception in 1993, the Lotus Light Charity Society has been fulfilling the dream and humanitarian vision of its founder, Buddhist Grand Master Sheng-Yen Lu, to provide help and comfort to people in need. Under the guidance of Master Lian Tzi, president of Lotus Light Charity Vancouver, the Charity invites its members and the general public to support the Children’s Food Backpack Program. Green Rubbermaid collection boxes are placed at Lotus Light Temple and Lotus Light Monastery, ready to receive your donations of any non-perishable foods for low-income families of Strathcona Community Centre’s Backpack Program. 150 families have registered to receive food every Friday.
Items needed are low in salt and sugar, high in protein, whole grains and fibre such as:
- Canned fish
- Canned or dried beans and lentils
- Soy products
- Low sodium soups
- Whole wheat and whole grain pasta
- Whole wheat and whole grain crackers
- High fibre breakfast cereal with no or little sugar
Your support is much appreciated! Thank you!
