Lotus Light Charity Society’s Emergency Weather Response Project in Action

Affected by a polar cold front, temperatures in the Greater Vancouver area have recently plummeted, with daytime temperatures dropping to as low as 2°C and nighttime lows reaching -4°C. In response to the extreme cold, Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver) dispatched its Emergency Weather Response Team to the streets to distribute winter supplies and food to those in need.

At 11:00 AM on February 19, with the outdoor temperature at only 2°C, the Lotus Light Winter Charity Drive – Emergency Weather Response Team conducted street outreach to distribute essential emergency weather supplies, including care packages, Emergency Survival Backpacks, winter coats and hoodies, hot coffee, boxed juice, potato chips, sandwiches, and pastries.

Nearly 100 unhoused individuals received donations of food and winter supplies.

One recipient expressed his gratitude to Lotus Light volunteers with a thumbs-up, saying, “It’s awesome! Thank you so much!” He also greeted the volunteers with “Kung Hei Fat Choi!”—a traditional Chinese New Year greeting in Cantonese meaning wishes for wealth and prosperity.

This outreach event also received special in-kind sponsorships, including hot coffee from Starbucks Terminal & Begg, sandwiches and pastries from Starbucks Vancouver Convention Centre, and pastries from Sweet Thea Bakery.

The Emergency Weather Response initiative is part of Lotus Light’s annual Winter Charity Drive. Each year, Lotus Light partners with the Homeless Outreach Team of the Vancouver Police Department, BC Ambulance Service, and the City of Vancouver Temporary Shelter Program to distribute essential care items and support vulnerable individuals in the community.

NOVAGOLD, a major sponsor of the Winter Charity Drive for three consecutive years from 2023 to 2025, is the sole sponsor of the Survival Backpack Pilot Project. This initiative has been carried out in partnership with Vancouver’s First Responders (police and paramedics) to assist the Downtown Eastside’s poorest and most vulnerable individuals impacted by hospital discharge following medical emergencies or drug overdose, emergency disaster situations, and Extreme Weather Alerts.
