Last Friday, two fires broke out within an hour in Downtown Eastside Vancouver (DTES) neighborhood and
many seniors living in the affected SRO buildings (low-income housing) were evacuated and arranged in temporary housing in urgent need of daily necessities.
Upon receiving information, Lotus Light Charity Society immediately organized volunteers to start an emergency program and donated more than two dozen throw blankets and personal hygiene products to help the vulnerable residents affected by the fires. “These materials are exactly what we need most right now. It’s so timely! Thank you very much!” the manger of Hotel Empress expressed her sincere thanks to Lotus Light’s help. The Hotel Empress is an SRO Cooperatives managed building providing temporarily accommodates for the elderly displaced by the fires.
In the same week, Lotus Light Food Recovery Team also donated 3,000 pounds of Que Pasa Chips to four organizations in Metro Vancouver, including Freedom Acts Foundation, Heart Tattoo Society, Aboriginal Front Door Society, Guru Nanak Free Kitchen, etc., which were distributed to people in need in the community.
