Preparing for the Lotus Light Community Caring Day: 16,000 lbs of Yogurt to Support Low-Income Families
On Saturday, July 19, the Lotus Light Charity Society will host the 9th Annual Lotus Light Community Caring Day to celebrate compassion and community support by distributing essential resources to vulnerable residents in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
In preparation for the event, Lotus Light volunteers have partnered with Lactalis Canada to donate 13.3 pallets of nutrient-rich yogurt—over 16,000 lbs, valued at more than $45,000 —to organizations serving low-income families across Metro Vancouver. Beneficiaries include Guru Nanak Free Kitchen Society, CityReach Care Society, Food Stash Foundation, DTES Distribution Hub / Heart Tattoo Society, and Quest Outreach Society.
Through its Food Recovery Program, Lotus Light has been rescuing surplus nutritious food from landfills and redistributing it to families, seniors, and children in need for over a decade. This initiative has earned national recognition, with a nomination from Second Harvest—Canada’s largest food rescue organization—for the 2023 Frontline Impact Award.
Volunteers are currently working hard to raise funds and collect in-kind donations for the July 19 event, which aims to bring attention and aid to the most vulnerable members of the Downtown Eastside.
