Annual Lotus Light Community Caring Day
Celebrates Spirit of Community Caring in Vancouver’s DTES
The LLCS held its first annual “Lotus Light Community Caring Day” event on July 8th, 2017 at Oppenheimer Park located in the heart of the Downtown Eastside’s (DTES) Vancouver, Strathcona Chinatown neighbourhood. This event is organized annually to celebrate the spirit of community care and to help the vulnerable members of the DTES neighbourhood by providing them with resources and support. This special public event is organized by the LLCS, and is supported by conscious corporate sponsors and partner community service organizations to help distribute food items, basic clothing, and personal hygiene care packages to the area’s most vulnerable low-income families, seniors, women, children, youth, and the homeless.
At previous events, LLCS volunteers alongside notable community leaders helped distribute care packages, sunglasses, and non-perishable food to benefit the community’s neediest members. Additionally, all attendees enjoyed complimentary boxed hot lunches, freshly baked cookies, samosas, coffee, hot dogs, and numerous other tasty treats! Youngsters and families in the neighbourhood also celebrated the day by enjoying face painting, entertainment by clowns, and by receiving special gifts including puzzles, toys, and food care packages.
At this event, the LLCS also presents the Greater Vancouver Food Bank with over 5000+ pounds of rice donation while also presenting Lotus Light Scholarship Awards to recognize students who have excelled in both academics and community service.
In the past, our VIP guests have included LLCS President Master Lian Tzi, Board member Dr. Floyd Wong, MP Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East), MLA George Chow (Vancouver-Fraserview), MLA Melanie Mark ( Vancouver – Mt. Pleasant), MLA Ms. Anne Kang (Burnaby – Deer Lake ), Deputy Mayor of Vancouver Councillor Tim Stevenson, and City of Vancouver Councillors Hector Bremner (2018), Sara Kirby-Yung, Rebecca Bligh,
