Donated 40,000 items valued over $100,000 to community partners

As snow starts falling across lower mainland on Tuesday, LLCS volunteers have been busy in delivering the care packages for the City of Vancouver temporary shelter program. Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver)’s 2017 Annual Charity Winter Drive continue distributing much needed sleeping bags and winter emergency care packages and toys and house hold items to Vancouver’s street homeless and impoverished residents through our community partners now and throughout the cold winter months

In Winter Charity Drive 2017, Lotus Light Charity Society donates over 40,000 items including new sleeping bags, various winter garments, personal hygiene products, toys and clothes valued over $100,000 for Winter Charity Drive 2017, to Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, Vancouver Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Program, BC Ambulance Service, Vancouver City’s Temporary Shelter, BC Ministry of Social Development’s Integration and Outreach Program for Richmond, Britannia Elementary School, Grandview Elementary School, SOS Children’s Village BC, and other homeless and impoverished family service organizations.

On Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 2:00pm, Lotus Light Charity Society presented to representatives of the Vancouver Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Program and the BC Ambulance Service and other organizations with a donation of 40,000 items valued at over $100,000 for Winter Charity Drive 2017. Honorable guests attended the presentation including MP Ms. Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East), City of Vancouver Councillor Hector Bremner, Vancouver Park Board Vice-Chair Ms. Erin Shum, Vancouver Police Department, Homeless Outreach and Supportive Housing Coordinator Constable Alyson Smith and her team, BC Ambulance Services Paramedic Chief Marilyn Oberg, BC Ministry of Social Development & Poverty Reduction, Richmond Outreach Team Donna Yuen, Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau Vice Chair of the Board of Director, Ms. Levang, Executive Director Mr. Doug Dunn, SOS Children’s Village BC, and neighborhood Assistants from Britannia Elementary School and Grandview Elementary School.

MP Jenny praised Lotus Light for organizing the annual Winter Charity Drive and other charity works to help the community. ”The charity works you do is not just occasionally, but through the course of the year for the community. What you do means you care for them, you tell them you matter, you are part of the community, and you are part of the large family.”

Vancouver Police Constable Aly Smith, Homeless Outreach Coordinator said: “Many have faced the homeless issue in our community, and we need to help them to dealing with it. From Vancouver Police Department, we are very grateful to the sleeping bags and care packages provided by Lotus Light. It means a great deal for us to help the community.

After the presentation, MP Jenny Kwan and Councillors Hector Bremner, Park Board Vice Chair Erin Shum, join Master Lian Tzi, president of LLCS and members of VPD homeless outreach team and BCAS paramedics, distributed of hundreds of sleeping bags, winter care packages and food snack bags directly to the street homeless in front of Lotus Light Charity’s head office.

Councillor Kerry Jang, leader of city’s temporary shelter program, also joined Lotus Light volunteers in Monday afternoon on December 18th, delivering care packages to the two shelters managed by RainCity Housing and Support Society.

“Buddha teach us to be kindness, compassion, joy and giving to others. The greatest thing we can do is to help someone in need. Let’s work together to bring warmth and hope to help the homeless survive the cold this winter,” said Buddhist Master Lian Tzi, President of Lotus Light.
