LLCS Donates to Local Food Security Program to Deliver Covid-19 Relief
A few days ago, Lotus Light Charity Society received an urgent request for food support from the coordinator of the Food Security Program at Strathcona Community Centre. The program is currently running short on resources, and LLCS has decided to respond by fundraising and donating food to meet the demand.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of low-income families needing food support has doubled, especially in the Strathcona neighbourhood. On Nov 23, Lotus Light immediately arranged a batch of produce and snacks to be sent to Strathcona Community Centre’s Food Security program , and will continue to support the program weekly.
According to Statistics Canada, the poverty rate for children in British Columbia is the highest in Canada. In Vancouver, many low-income families with school-aged children often experience food insecurity and struggle to make ends meet. Furthermore, many adults in low-income families work outside of school hours, such as on weekends, which poses additional challenges.
In other words, the Food Security Program at Strathcona Community Centre is extremely important to the health and well-being of many vulnerable families in the surrounding neighbourhood.
LLCS is proud to be a longtime contributor to these relief efforts. Since 2014, LLCS has run its “Food Backpack” program to deliver non-perishable and nutritious foods every week to the Food Security Program at Strathcona Community Centre. In the past seven years, LLCS has donated over 20,000 pounds of groceries to the program to help low-income families in need.
