On Saturday, July 23rd, 2016, Lotus Light Charity Society held its seventh hot meals distribution event of the year for the homeless and vulnerable members of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside community. In what has become a regular monthly event, LLCS volunteers distributed food and snacks in the Downtown Eastside’s Oppenheimer Park. Following a breakfast of hot dogs from fellow local charity Ham or Jam, over 250 people lined up for a hot lunch provided by the Lotus Light Charity Society.
This time, LLCS volunteers prepared hearty entrées, supplemented by generous donations from our sponsors. Entrée options included chili macaroni with beans, or ravioli soup, both prepared by LLCS volunteers that morning immediately prior to serving. These were served with fresh assorted bread, courtesy of Terra Breads (located at 1605 Manitoba St), and pepperoni sticks courtesy of McSweeney’s. Sun Fresh Bakery (located at 245 Keefer St) provided almond cookies for dessert, and finally, iced water was served in lieu of the regular hot Chinese tea on account of the warm July weather.
Overall, the LLCS was able to provide a much needed hot meal to over 250 homeless and vulnerable members of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside community. Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without help from our generous sponsors, who ensured LLCS’ own prepared entrées were well complemented with sides and a dessert. Thanks to their generosity and the hard work of LLCS volunteers, we were able to lend a hand and make a small but meaningful difference in the lives of over 250 homeless and vulnerable members of our community, who were able to enjoy a much needed hot meal.
LLCS looks forward to our next distribution event in August.
