LLCS Covid Emergency Kitchen Program Expanded to Help DTES SRO Tenants
On May 12, 2021, Volunteers from DTES SRO happily received the hot meals prepared by Lotus Light Charity Soup Kitchen. The LLCS Covid Emergency Kitchen was established last summer as LLCS’s response to the urgent meal needs of DTES vulnerable groups. Since the July 2020, more than 10,000 meals have been prepared and distributed by the charity kitchen program, the program has greatly eased the food insecurity issue caused by the Covid -19 pandemic in DTES community. Recently, the charity meal program is expanded to also help the impoverished senior and women tenants who are living in the DTES single room occupancy hotels (SRO). Coordinator Jill expresses thanks on behalf the vulnerable groups benefited.
LLCS continues donating more than 100 lbs for food items weekly to Strathcona Community Centre Food Hub to help the low-income families living in the supportive housing community. Recent donation including Fruit Juice, Jam, powdered milk, cheese, cooking condiments, maple syrup, cracker, frozen meat and bacon. Lorraine, community food developer in Strathcona community centre, thanks Lotus Light for the continue supports. “We have expanded our traditional children food backpack program to also cover the low-income families in the social housing units. We need lots food to help the 700+ families.”
