LLCS Food Recovery Program
LLCS Food Recovery Program has been running more than twelve years, starting with weekly bread pickup from a North Van bakery. Most recently, through collaboration with FoodMesh.ca Network and Second Harvest FoodRescue Network, the program has delivered thousands of pounds of food to inner-city school children, families, seniors and homeless each month in partnership with local food producers, distributors and community agencies.
Lotus Light’s Food Recovery program, established more than 12 years started with a weekly bread pick up from a North Van bakery, has now delivered more than five thousands of pounds of food to inner-city school children, low income families, seniors and homeless each month. In partnership with food recovery networks Second Harvest, FoodMesh.ca, local supermarkets and grocery stores, food producers, distributors and community agencies, Lotus Light Food Recovery program has benefited over a thousand vulnerable families communities throughout Metro Vancouver, and saved thousands pounds of much needed nutrient foods from going into landfills. Lotus Light has just signed up with a new Food Recovery partner Fresh Street Market to provide fresh produce, meat and bakery products to support Lotus Light Charity Kitchen and food program to benefit people in need. “ We are glad to be able to help the needy people in DTES community,” said Glen, store manager of Fresh Street Market.
In January 2023, Lotus Light Charity Society is nominated by Second Harvest – Canada’s largest food rescue organization for the Frontline Impact award for the Second Harvest’s 2023 Food Rescue Awards program. (https://www.secondharvest.ca/events/event-calendar/2023-food-rescue-awards)
The first annual Food Rescue Awards held by Second Harvest recognizes and celebrates supporters within the Second Harvest community who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to Second Harvest’s vision of No Waste, No Hunger. Lotus Light Charity Society’s commitment to fighting food insecurity is recognized.
