Lotus Light Children Assistance Plan Donates Grocery Foods to Support Inner-City Schools before Spring Break

Last weekend, Lotus Light organized volunteers to pack several hundreds bags of premium rice for the “Children Assistance Plan” (CAP)  to support the inner-city school hamper program. Volunteers get more than 3,000 lbs of bagged rice, canned tuna, tomato sauce, canned soup, instant noodles, fruit juice, and snacks ready in the activity hall to be donated to inner-city schools this week. Six inner-city schools, including John Oliver Secondary, Templeton Secondary, Thunderbird Elementary, Seymour Elementary, Xpey’ Elementary and Strathcona Elementary, received Lotus Light CAP support before the spring break.

Lotus Light’s “Children Assistance Plan” has been expanded from the original Children Backpack program that started ten years ago, now helping more schools and students from low-income families. Especially since the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic, more low-income families with school-aged children have to rely on food banks and the school’s “Food Hamper Program” to receive food due to unemployment and inflation. Lindsey, Food Security Assistant of the Backpack program in Strathcona Community Centre, told volunteers that they are serving about 180 families every week. The Strathcona Backpack program,  providing grocery support to the low-income family of Strathcona Elementary School and Ray-Cam Elementary School, has long received donations from Lotus Light. They thank Lotus Light’s long-time weekly food donation support to their program.

According to the feedback from the school assistance program, parents of students prefer to receive grocery shopping cards for daily necessities according to the family’s needs to save money. Given this, Lotus Light has donated thousands of gift cards with a total value of over $20,000 for three consecutive years since the outbreak of the Pandemic to support students from low-income families in inner-city schools. Lotus Light is currently raising funds for grocery shopping cards in 2023. We welcome corporate and individual sponsors to provide monetary and in-kind donation support for Lotus Light’s Children Assistance Plan to help students from low-income families. Every penny you donate to support our children is an investment in the future of our country.
