Lotus Light Charity Society is nominated by Second Harvest – Canada’s largest food rescue organization for the Frontline Impact Award for the Second Harvest’s 2023 Food Rescue Awards program, to recognize Lotus Light’s commitment in fighting food insecurity and helping those in need in the communities.
Lotus Light launched Food Recovery for Low-income Family and Homeless Program in 2010 with a weekly bread pickup from a north van bakery, which now provides an average of 10,000 lbs of food each month to help our local communities donated from food warehouses, restaurants, bakeries and grocery chains. From 2010-2018, the weekly bread collection from Cobs Bakery resulted in over 150,000 lbs of food to benefit low-income programs and charity soup kitchens.
Today, Lotus Light’s food recovery program has expanded to weekly grocery collections from A Bread Affair, Terra Breads, Save-On Foods, Starbucks, Nesters Market, Wholesale Club, Meinhardt, T&T Supermarket, Sungiven Foods and Fresh Street Market, and large quantity collections from food manufacture, food warehouse and Food rescue networks. The positive impact now is more far reaching than ever before from Vancouver, Tri-cities area, Richmond, Surrey and Abbotsford, helping migrant farm workers, low-income school programs, refugees and immigrant families, seniors, homeless shelter soup kitchens, multiple charities and emergency food hubs and saved over a million pounds of much needed nutrient foods from going into landfills. All the achievement is done by a very small team of volunteers in collaboration with many community partners.
The first annual Second Harvest Food Rescue Awards recognizes and celebrates supporters within the Second Harvest community who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the vision of No Waste, No Hunger. “Your nomination stood out to our selection committee, and Lotus Light Charity Society’s commitment to fighting food insecurity is clear.” said Shelley Lycan, Second Harvest’s Head of Operations in B.C.
Currently, Lotus Light is actively fundraising of fund and in-kind donation for 2023 programs. Lotus Light relies on financial and in-kind donations from individuals and corporate sponsors to support the charity’s multi-faceted services and programs: Lotus Light Community Caring Day, Children Assistance Plan, Lotus Light Scholarship, etc.
