Lotus Light Launches a Soup Kitchen to Feed Those in Need
In the spring of 2020, the Lotus Light Charity Society (LLCS) turned an old kitchen into an emergency soup kitchen as a response to the urgent need of vulnerable residents living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). The Charity Soup Kitchen formally opened at the end of July 2020 and has since provided free meals and drinks to the homeless and other vulnerable community members. Since its opening, the LLCS has served more than 10,000 meals to those in need.
This past spring, the LLCS also initiated an organic garden to grow fruit and vegetables that can be used to prepare meals in the kitchen.
The Charity Kitchen received support from many community partners, non-profit organizations, and volunteers. The Second Harvest/ FoodRescue.ca awarded the LLCS with an emergency fund to help upgrade the kitchen. The LLCS also received emergency funds from the Vancouver Foundation and United Way Lower Mainland.
This initiative is also supported by the LLCS Food Recovery Program, with collaboration among community partners FoodMesh.ca (a food rescue network), the Wholesale Club, the Charity’s organic garden, and other organizations.
The Charity’s Soup Kitchen will arrange meal pickups for charities and non-profit organizations serving the DTES vulnerable population on Wednesdays and Fridays at 12:45 p.m.
The LLCS welcomes donations of any amount to support the lives of our fellow impoverished residents. Your donation is much appreciated and will be used to help us continue programs like the Charity Soup Kitchen to help residents in need.
