Lotus Light Welcome Chinese New Year with Donations of Produces and Frozen Meat to Help Community

On Thursday, January 19, 2023, Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver) food recovery program rescued and donated 500 lbs of frozen fruits and vegetables, dairy products, frozen meats and fresh produce to community kitchens, food distribution centers to help low-income families in the community, especially the Asian community to welcome the Chinese New Year. Recipients includes Yarrow Intergeneration Society, DTES Distribution Hub, Stratchcona Food Hub and UBC Sprout Student Food Club.

Lotus Light’s Food Recovery program, established for more than 12 years started with a weekly bread pick up from a North Van bakery, has now delivered more than five thousands of pounds of food to inner-city school children, low income families, seniors and homeless each month in partnership with local food producers, distributors and community agencies and benefits over a thousand vulnerable families communities throughout Metro Vancouver, and saved thousands pounds of much needed nutrient foods from going into landfills. Lotus Light has just signed up with a new Food Recovery partner Fresh Street Market to provide fresh produce, meat and bakery products to support Lotus Light Charity Kitchen and food program to benefit people in need. “ We are glad to be able to help the needy people in DTES community,” said Glen, store manager of Fresh Street Market.

This month, Lotus Light Charity Society is nominated by Second Harvest – Canada’s largest food rescue organization for the Frontline Impact award for the Second Harvest’s 2023 Food Rescue Awards program. (https://www.secondharvest.ca/events/event-calendar/2023-food-rescue-awards)
